Help us celebrate SafetyReps@40

It is 40 years since the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977 created the role of trade union safety representatives to improve health and safety in the workplace and what a difference this has made to workplaces up and down the country.

At the same time as celebrating 40 years of Unite safety representatives, Unite’s Health and Safety Unit is preparing a new edition of the Health and Safety guide, and plan to publish the guide in November 2017.

National Health and Safety Advisers, Bud Hudspith and Susan Murray are looking for some examples of safety reps “getting health and safety sorted” in the workplace to recognise their contribution and inspire other reps and they are looking for some positive stories that emphasise the importance and value of the regulations, and of safety representatives.

As this is about the 1977 regulations, work that is not about the representative’s employer, such as national/sectoral/regional work, is not of any use (except Equity/MU cases). For the purposes of this report, activities on issues not covered by the regulations, such as well-being, cannot be included.

The information needed is:

  • the name of the representative; the employer; what was done and what was achieved. Case studies should be at least 200 words and no more than 500. Please provide an email/phone contact for the representative.
  • It would also be useful to get testimonies from any union health and safety reps who were safety reps/safety stewards before 1977 to talk about the difference that the regulations have made. Again 200-400 words would be ideal.

Please contact Bud Hudspith or Susan Murray, National Health and Safety Advisers with all information and they can then liaise with reps and pass on information to the TUC and work up their own case studies for the report.

The TUC will be running a campaign to celebrate 40 years of trade union health and safety reps which will be launched on Wednesday 25th October 2017, (National Inspection Day) and finish on Workers Memorial Day on 28th April 2018. You can find more information here.
